If you run applications that eat a lot of resource, then AlacrityPC could offer a solution. It was designed to optimize your PCs resource usage. Prior to starting up a resource intensive application, it will shut down minor applications before starting up the desired one. Typically, it would remove your desktop background, shut down the Vista sidebar and the desktop shell. Functions are forced to run in the background.
On top of this main feature, AlacrityPC performs some value added functions. It can serve as a memory defragmenter and it can manage your unprioritized applications. See, it uses a profiling system. You draw up your profile by selecting lower priority application that should be closed. The developers have specified 2 levels of profiles. There is the top-level profile, which will acts as the primary profile and always take precedent over lesser profiles. This is useful when changes need to be made that require a number of applications to continue running. Then there are inherited profiles which assume all settings from its primary profile and from there you could deviate by adding and removing settings. AlacrityPC follows FSAutoStart up and is written in C#.Net2.0.
